The Duchy of Leesburg

Official Intelligence, Proclamations & Sundry Observations — Loudoun County, Virginia

Royal Proclamations & Current Intelligence

A Greeting from His Grace, the Duke

Hark, weary traveller, and attend well to these words! Thou hast arrived — whether by thy own intent or by the cruel caprice of a GPS device of dubious intelligence — at the digital threshold of Leesburg, Virginia, seat of the noble Duchy of Loudoun, jewel of the Northern Virginia commuter belt, and home to more wine tastings per capita than any fiefdom this side of Middleburg.

Leesburg doth sit some thirty-five leagues west of the great swamp city of Washington, a proximity which hath proven both its greatest blessing and its most enduring curse. For whilst the capital bringeth commerce and employment to our humble shire, it also bringeth those who speak of nothing but their commute times as though they were war wounds worthy of a ballad.

His Grace bids thee welcome. Mind the roundabout on Market Street — it hath claimed the hubcaps of many a noble carriage.

Geography & Situation of the Realm

Leesburg doth occupy a most strategic position in the rolling hills of Loudoun County — a county so wealthy it hath its own airport, Dulles International, though Loudoun receives none of the glory and all of the noise.

The town proper is bounded to the east by the Dulles Greenway, a toll road of such audacious pricing that many a peasant hath chosen to sit in traffic on Route 7 for an additional hour rather than pay the tithe. To the west lie the vineyards and the horse farms of those who have, at some point, made a great deal of money and would very much like you to know it.

The Potomac River winds to the north and east, offering scenic beauty and the occasional flooding of the lower trails at the Balls Bluff Battlefield — a Civil War site where Union soldiers famously discovered that crossing a river in the face of Confederate rifles was, in hindsight, a poor stratagem.

The climate is best described as aggressively seasonal: winters of sufficient brutality to inspire dread, summers of such oppressive humidity that one's spectacles fog upon exiting any air-conditioned establishment, and springs of approximately eleven days before the heat returns.

Commerce, Trade & the Economy of the Realm

The economy of Leesburg resteth upon three great pillars: government contracting, the consumption of wine, and the construction of townhomes upon every remaining surface of land within a twenty-mile radius.

The Market District

Downtown Leesburg doth boast a charming historic district along King Street, where one may find excellent restaurants, independent shops, and at least three establishments competing simultaneously for the title of "most authentic Irish pub." The brick façades date to the early nineteenth century, providing an air of antiquity that helpeth justify the parking rates.

The Leesburg Premium Outlets

Located at the eastern edge of the realm, this great bazaar attracteth pilgrims from across the mid-Atlantic region, all seeking discounted luxury goods and the particular madness of a Coach handbag at thirty percent off. On weekends, the approach roads transform into a procession of such density and slowness that historians have drawn comparisons to the siege of Constantinople, though the stakes are arguably lower.

The Wine Industry

Loudoun County boasteth more than forty wineries, which His Grace considers either a triumph of agriculture or a coping mechanism, depending on the day. The wines are genuinely quite good. The tasting room experiences are, shall we say, enthusiastically priced. It is advised to designate one member of thy party as the sober driver, lest thy carriage end up in a ditch on Route 9 admiring the Blue Ridge at an angle not intended by the road's designers.

Notable Sites & Points of Interest

For the visitor who hath survived the journey here and wishes now to improve their mind or simply justify the trip, the Duchy offereth the following destinations of note.

Morven Park

A grand estate and former governor's mansion set upon 1,000 acres of rolling terrain. Hath carriage museums, equestrian facilities, and a Greek Revival mansion of considerable grandeur. Admission is modest. The peacocks roam freely and answer to no authority, not even His Grace.

Balls Bluff Battlefield & National Cemetery

The site of an 1861 Civil War engagement of such tactical mismanagement that it resulted in a Senate investigation and the creation of the Congressional Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War. A small but solemn national cemetery sits within. His Grace recommendeth a visit for its historical gravity and its excellent river views, though he cautioneth against bringing children who will insist on rolling down the bluff.

The Loudoun Museum

A compact but earnest institution on Loudoun Street, chronicling the history of the county from its indigenous inhabitants through to the present era of explosive growth. The volunteers are extraordinarily knowledgeable and will tell you things about Leesburg you did not ask for but will be glad to know.

The W&OD Trail

A 45-mile paved trail running from Purcellville to Arlington, passing directly through Leesburg. Cyclists use it with great enthusiasm. Pedestrians use it with moderate enthusiasm. The cyclists and the pedestrians regard each other with the thinly veiled mutual suspicion of neighboring medieval kingdoms.

Local Customs & Matters of Culture

Every realm developeth its own customs, and Leesburg is no exception. The following observations are offered to the newcomer so that they may integrate seamlessly into the fabric of local life and avoid social censure.

On the matter of traffic: One doth not discuss the commute in terms of distance, only time. To say one lives "ten miles from DC" is a statement of geography. To say one lives "an hour and forty-five minutes from DC on a good day" is a statement of identity, and a source of great communal bonding.

On the matter of development: Every resident moved to Leesburg when it was "still nice," which is to say before the arrival of whatever neighborhood was built immediately after theirs. This opinion is held simultaneously and without irony by all residents, regardless of when they arrived.

On the matter of horses: The western portion of the county regardeth horses with a reverence typically reserved for minor deities. One doth not honk at a horse trailer. One simply waits. This is not optional.

On the matter of weekends: Between May and November, the correct answer to "what are you doing this weekend?" is "winery." Deviations from this answer are permitted but require explanation.

His Grace doth commend these resources to the citizenry, that they may conduct their civic affairs with all due efficiency.

Petition His Grace

Hath thou intelligence to contribute, a grievance to register, or simply a desire to correspond with a Duke of middling authority and excellent taste? His Grace doth receive correspondence with varying degrees of timeliness.

Dispatches may be directed to the usual channels. His Grace's courier pigeon is, regrettably, still stuck on the Dulles Greenway.
